Compared to most shorthair breeds British Shorthairs are relatively calm cats, they are mellow and easy going making excellent family companions.
Adult British are a large cat and generally don't like being carried around, they are more likely to follow you around curiously involving themselves in whatever you are doing. They enjoy being with you and will happily play with toys on their own but prefer human company.
British Shorthairs are rarely destructive and once become mature are likely to be descried as couch potatoes. These cats are quite happy to be an inside only cat.
With a short thick coat, round head and cheeks, big round eyes, and rounded body, the British Shorthair is often described as a teddy bear of the cat world.
The coat is easy to maintain with a brush once a week to remove loose hair. The coat comes in just about any colour or pattern including lilac, chocolate, black, white, pointed, tabby and many more.
The best known colour is blue (gray) and are often referred to as British Blues.
British Shorthairs are mild mannered well suited to life with families with children and cat friendly dogs. For best results always introduce pets, even other cats, slowly in a controlled setting.
